TRIP TO THE DAM KAMENIČKA
The dam reservoir Kamenička belongs to the oldest technical monuments in Chomutov region. It is located about eight kilometres from Chomutov in a beautiful valley of the Ore Mountains along the stream of the same name which forms the left-hand tributary of the river Chomutovka.
Thanks to a short distance we can go on foot, but a bicycle tour is the best solution. The entire route runs along an asphalt road free of any traffic except a short stretch between the mill II and III. We can pass through a substantial part of the Bezruč valley which ranks among the longest and deepest valleys in the whole Ore Mountains. On the way we can cool off in a restaurant of mill I. When climbing the dike we can be perspiring, but it is worth the effort. The impressive building and the view of the water surface in a quiet valley evoke an impressive impression. The stone dam rises from the valley bottom up to 31 meters and its crest length is 153 meters. The dam was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th century as the reservoir of drinking water for Chomutov. An interesting fact is that its bottom and walls are paved. Today its economic importance declined since most drinking water is supplied from the Křímov dam and nearby dam Přísečnice. Yet this water work which shows the craft and skills of old masters deserves our respect.
